First ever Hello-Win Arts Festival

makes enchanting debut in Woodlands

The inaugural Hello-Win Arts Festival is inspired by the fusion of Eastern mythology with the phantasmagorical realms of the imagination typified by Western cultural traditions such as Halloween day. Organized by the Contemporary Arts Research Association (CARA), the Hello-Win Arts Festival will take place on the 29th and the 30th of October, 5.30pm to 10pm at the I-Ching with Arts Gallery (10 Oakwood Grove Singapore 738260).

On the evening of 31st, Halloween day itself, where three to four thousand residents parade from door to door in a plethora of Halloween costumes and make-up. A custom-made giant pumpkin gate imprinted with the well-known blue and white colors of Chinese porcelain welcomes invited guests into a showcase of Art where deities and demons shine in equal measure.

Mr Alex Yam, Mayor of the North-West District, Ms Hany Soh, Member of Parliament, Professor Tan Eng Chye, President of the National University of Singapore, Professor Wong Yoon Wah, esteemed scholar-cum-poet, and Ms Duo La,distinguished artist-writer from Malaysia, are the Guests-of-Honor for this year’s event.

The call for artists for the Inaugural Hello-Win Arts Festival has been encouraging; over 40 writer-poets, painters, musicians, dancers, theater performers, photographers, and folk artisans have come forth with their own unique interpretations of the thematic nuances surrounding deities and demons.

Grandmaster Tan Khoon Yong will be unveiling his latest masterpieces which contain a cryptic message for humanity, as well as a wonderfully-conceived coffin that pays homage to the water lilies of Monet. Also on display is a rare painting by Mr Koh Teng Huat, of knife-painting fame. Ms Jennifer Soen, a veteran curator, will also be lending sculptures from her private collection to this year’s exhibition.

The organizers are also privileged to have Professor Wong Yoon Wah don his mask for us, in a magnificent recital of his famous poem, Shadow play, in three languages. Dr Chua Chee Lay has also prepared a poem especially for the Inaugural Hello-Win Arts Festival – The Nine Songs of the Mountain Spirit which is not only accompanied by moving stills from the Xiang Ling Musical Society, but also presented seamlessly in tandem with the vocal artistry of Cai Yu-Cheng. Guests can also view the hauntingly beautiful ceramic works of NAFA student, Ms Hou Xuan Ting as well as the works of students from Nanyang Girls’High School.

Representatives from the field of Theatre and Musicals also feature in this year’s event: The Teochew Opera Association will be performing, as well as a piece by the Xiang Ling Musical Society based on Mr Lin Shao-Lin’s adaption of Mr Ding Ma-Cheng’s screenplay, The 100 shades of life utilizing masks to signify the exigencies of everyday life. It is a performance that allows the throng of Halloween Day revellers to imbibe the charm of the traditional sounds from the South, or Nan Yin, even as they masquerade as demons and ghouls.

Guests will also have a chance to hear from the voices and musical creations of talents from Hitmaker Global Academy, led by two emerging stars, Yang Ting Ting and Wu Jiang Yi Ge, who have composed the theme song for this year’s event.

The Soul of Ink by Mr Woon Tai Ho, a Singapore Book Awards nominated book written about Singapore’s beloved artist Mr Lim Tze Peng will also be made available for sale to guests at a special discount in support for the event.
