Grand Master Tan Khoon Yong

Grand Master Tan Khoon Yong is a renowned fengshui master from Singapore. His expertise in the geomancy field has brought him worldwide recognition. Some of the notable projects taken on by GM Tan and his team at Way Fengshui Group include Parkview Green Beijing, Suzhou Jinji Lake International Golf Club, Paragon Singapore, DUO Singapore (a collaborated project by Singapore and Malaysia). Besides, GM Tan has conducted more than 1000 seminars worldwide, sharing the age-old studies of fengshui. GM Tan’s art journey can be traced back to strict teachings from his grandfather who was also a fengshui practitioner. Since young, GM Tan has been taught to make careful observations of fengshui landscapes and formations prior to documenting his findings in detailed drawings. This practice allowed the Master to develop a good foundation in drawing. During his middle years, GM Tan resumed his art journey and found his niche in perspective paintings. The idea of perspective paintings allows the audience to gain unique insights to each artwork from different viewing angles. Combining the concept of I-Ching and art, GM Tan uses various painting techniques such as ink splash, fingertip flicks and free-flowing paint to create innovative fengshui artworks. In 2014, GM Tan was invited to Beijing for the inaugural launch of his solo art exhibition, which was a roaring success. In the same year, a special collection of the Master’s works was complied into a book called “I-Ching with Arts”. One year on, GM Tan held another solo art exhibition in Shanghai. In 2016, the artistically gifted fengshui master organised his inaugural art exhibition in Singapore, also titled “I-Ching with Arts”. The exhibition proved to be a success as all artwork on display were sold before the end of the event, with a portion of proceeds donated to charity.

About GM Tan’s 3 Paintings:

Heaven has a path;
There are no gates to Hell;
On Earth, there is a Way.

The philosophical question arises:
Why do we not walk Heaven's path?
Why do we intrude into Hell where no gates exist?
Why the endless travail and sorrow upon the Way on Earth?
Hope the answers to your questions can be found in these paintings.

Evelyn Huang

"I have always been fascinated by the delicate relationship between the interaction of urban spaces to themselves, to man, and to nature. Buildings or spaces to me, they are full of life and historical memories.

I like to observe the daily mix of contradictions and harmony between things. Interdependence, the subtlety of confrontation. From my sensibility of view to deconstruct and reshape, about time, memory, life feelings into the picture, A painting for me is my instinctive way of recording my memories and emotions.

In the current pluralistic social environment, inheritance and change are implicit and constantly updated. People look for themselves in confusion and anxiety. But I think everyone needs a window to reconcile with yourself. For individuals, the creative process is a form of self-dialogue and reconciliation, and I enjoy peace and loneliness in painting."

About the artworks

The ghost maiden

In Pu Songling's famous "Strange tales from a Chinese studio," written during the Qing Dynasty, the ghost maiden is observed to be invariably a person with a kind heart. Why is this so?

Perhaps, in another dimension, there exists not only malevolent spirits, but also kind-hearted ones.

Perhaps the author believes that human beings are, indeed, scarier than ghosts.

Beauty and the Beast

A love story begins at the fall of a rose petal. The meeting of the twain is filled with genuine affection. The metamorphosis of the hideous beast into a handsome prince is a result of his staying true, to his heart.

"Art for me is a journey. A process, rather than a destination, an ongoing expression of life's meandering over seasons of change, of self-discovery, and understanding of the world we live in.

As an artist on an ongoing journey of life and inspiration, I continue to draw inspiration from the world around me to refine my craft and bring you art that remains relevant, current, and inspirational. "Since I was a child, I've always had a strong affinity with music and the arts.

When I started out with calligraphy during my foundational years as an artist, I began to develop a strong interest in art as a way to express what was in the deepest recesses of my heart and as a language of my soul. This also led me to a strong interest in abstract art - a powerful contemplative space and a medium through which personal healing can be achieved or facilitated.

With a firm belief in the value of life-long learning, I continue to be under the tutelage of Singapore-based Chinese artist Wang Fei, as well as Singapore-based Taiwanese artist Hui Fang.

I also enjoy the study of psychology, and love how art can be such an effective and impactful medium for exploring our inner spaces.. As I hone my interest further in using art as an approach to therapy, I hope that my art will continue to transform lives and inspire you.

As always, I'm eternally grateful to have you on our shared journey."

"My practice in ceramics and sculpture is a result of my interest in tactility. My works explore the raw nature of the materials that were adopted for my sculpture or even clay in itself. As a passionate individual and loyal advocate for sustainability, it is important for me to use my works to help raise engage audiences in an intellectual dialogue for a green home.

Crying Out is inspired by the idea of one's inner child, exploring and questioning its unheard cries; acknowledging the discomfort one feels when viewing the work. This work is accompanied by a short poem."

"The pandemic period allowed me to start picking up painting and within the year and a half of starting, it has become a way for me to find solace. Expressing the my feelings."

Eric Chan

Born in a traditional family in 80s Singapore, Eric has had a strong interest in Chinese traditions and Arts since young, partaking in activities such as Wushu, lion dance, and Chinese painting.

His studies at Laselle College of the Arts introduced Western Art into his worldview, as well as exposing him to various medium such as oil, acrylic, sculpture etc. He was also involved in school workshops. This work with children would eventually shape his artistic inclinations.

The two art forms that Eric truly loves and excels in are graffiti and abstract art. He continues to steer the trajectory of his artistic pursuits in this direction, hoping to firmly cement a style he can call his own.

(LASALLE College of the Arts)專攻西方精美藝術和藝術管理。

Ng Choon Kiat

Ng chooses joss paper in line with the theme of the exhibition. Firstly, he questions the age old ritual of joss burning in his hometown during festivals which invariably involves offerings to deities and ancestors alike. Second, he toys with the ideas inspired by the conventional designs found on these joss papers. And through his creativity, wishes that people look upon the burning of joss papers without prejudice.
